North Platte

North Platte, Nebraska, has a rich and colorful history, deeply rooted in the expansion of the American West and the nation's railroad industry. Established in 1868 as a vital stop along the Union Pacific Railroad, North Platte quickly grew from a small frontier town into a bustling city known for its strategic importance and vibrant community spirit.

In the early 20th century, North Platte earned the nickname "Little Chicago" due to its lively nightlife and the influence of bootlegging during Prohibition. The city was a crossroads for travelers, traders, and adventurers, contributing to its reputation as a place of excitement and opportunity.

One of the most remarkable episodes in North Platte's history was the creation of the North Platte Canteen during World War II. This massive volunteer effort began on December 17, 1941, when local families gathered at the North Platte Depot to give Christmas presents to their loved ones in the Nebraska National Guard. However, when the train arrived, it was carrying soldiers from the Kansas National Guard instead. Despite their initial disappointment, the families decided to give their gifts to these soldiers, sparking an idea in the mind of Rae Wilson, a local store clerk. She proposed the creation of a canteen to greet every troop train passing through North Platte.

The North Platte Canteen officially opened on December 25, 1941, quickly becoming a symbol of community spirit and generosity. Operating out of the Cody Hotel and later the Union Pacific Depot, the canteen served over 6 million troops during the war, offering them coffee, homemade treats, and a brief respite from the rigors of war. Remarkably, no soldier was ever charged, and no train was ever missed..

The legacy of the North Platte Canteen is a testament to the city's enduring spirit of kindness and hospitality. This sense of community continues to be a cornerstone of life in North Platte, inspiring efforts to revitalize the downtown area and preserve the city's unique heritage.
