Revitalization of Downtown North Platte: The Canteen District
The transformation of Downtown North Platte into the vibrant and historic "Canteen District" has been a major milestone for the community. This four-year revitalization project, which began in 2018 and concluded in 2021, breathed new life into the heart of the city while paying homage to its rich history. The effort was recognized for its excellence, sharing the Nebraska Main Street Network’s 2022 Best Streetscape/Public Improvement Project award alongside other notable initiatives across the state.
Preserving History, Enhancing the Future
North Platte has long been known for its cultural significance, with deep roots in the Old West, the railroad, and western migration. The revitalization of the downtown area reflects this heritage, blending historic preservation with modern amenities. The brick streets, festoon lighting, and distinctive architecture in the newly named Canteen District create a unique atmosphere where residents and visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds.
The district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, now serves as a hub of activity. From charming boutiques and restaurants to year-round events, the area has been transformed into a lively destination that highlights North Platte’s history while providing a contemporary experience for all who visit.
A New Look for the Bricks
One of the key aspects of the revitalization was updating "The Bricks," the nickname for North Platte's downtown. The infrastructure beneath downtown was nearly 100 years old, and as the city worked on these essential updates, the North Platte Downtown Association seized the opportunity to give the area a much-needed facelift.
In addition to replacing the aging infrastructure, new features were added to beautify and modernize the space. Festoon lighting now stretches from Fourth to Sixth Street, with archways and other aesthetic touches welcoming visitors. The festoon lighting, with its ability to change colors for community events and holidays, creates a festive and adaptable atmosphere. Benches, planters, trash cans, and digital boards were also thoughtfully placed to enhance the district’s functionality and appeal.
Welcoming the Community Back
The renovation project, which began in phases, was carefully designed to create minimal disruption while maximizing the impact of the improvements. By September 2020, visitors could already see the new lighting, brickwork, and the first signs of a transformed downtown.
Local businesses have embraced the changes, with many property owners noticing the improvements. With clearer visibility of storefronts, residents, and tourists can now easily discover the many hidden gems downtown has to offer. Owners expressed excitement about updating the building’s façade and windows, part of a wave of revitalization that has swept through the entire district.
Community
Spirit and Dedication
The revitalization of the Canteen District was more than just a beautification effort—it was a testament to the strength of the community’s spirit. While there were challenges, including the controversial removal of trees, these decisions were made with the future in mind. Many of the trees were in poor health, and plans to replant new, flourishing greenery were a key component of the project’s long-term vision.

Shae Caldwell, a member of the Downtown Association Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of creating a space where people can spend a full day exploring, shopping, and dining. The association envisions the Canteen District as a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a welcoming, family-friendly environment that highlights the best of North Platte.
Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
At the heart of the revitalization project was the decision to rename the downtown area as the Canteen District, honoring North Platte’s historic role during World War II. The North Platte Canteen, a volunteer-driven effort that served over six million troops passing through the city’s train depot during the war, exemplified the community’s generosity and unity. Naming the revitalized downtown after this pivotal chapter in the city’s history serves as a tribute to the past while paving the way for a vibrant and connected future.
The Future of the Canteen District
The completion of the revitalization project has already had a significant impact on the city. With its mix of historic charm and modern enhancements, the Canteen District has become a symbol of North Platte’s growth and dedication to its heritage. From the new archways and lighting to the promise of lush new landscaping, the district is set to flourish in the years to come.

As the city moves forward, the Canteen District stands as a beacon of what can be achieved through community collaboration, dedication, and a shared vision for the future. Whether you're shopping, dining, or simply strolling along the historic brick streets, the Canteen District invites everyone to experience the renewed energy and enduring spirit of Downtown North Platte.
